Milford's Story

** Updated 12-May-2008 ** My Kids Luckily (for me), I believe they both have the better qualities of their mother and father. My Job Pretty interesting, considering the options I could have settled for before, and since my unexpected layoff from Boeing in 1999. During my employment at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, I have ranged from aircraft assembly, technical inspection, to Quality Engineering, to contract employee. Since the August '99 layoffs, I have discovered a new world of self-employment as a contract QA/QC Inspector. I'm working within the aeronautical/aerospace, marine, petroleum, petrochemical, industrial, commercial and nuclear power industries. The tasks deal with knowledge and abilities I've acquired since school years, military & college, and it continues daily. Learning is a perpetual process, isn't it? Therefore, since my job is widely technical in nature, I'm doing more traveling than I would have ever expected, while going to school in the states. Briefly, since 2000, I've worked West to East on portions of the Alaskan Pipeline, in Valdez; jet engine inspections in CT; nuclear power plant outages in PA; helicopter turbine x-ray inspections in Indiana; jet fighter Non-Destructive Inspections (NDI) on F-15 jet fighters (made in STL) for the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF), in Riyadh, KSA, etc. I'm presently (2008) working (15 minutes, via helicopter) Northeast of Baghdad, in an area called Taji. Going into my 3rd year there now, with anticipation of starting a 1-year tour in Baghdad this coming June-2008. Both regions were at one time, or presently in the 'Red Zones', you hear about in the media. I've been within 75-yds of two RPG¿s (Rocket Propelled Grenades), in Taji; plus a suicide car bomb attempt in Saudi Arabia. In my goofy head, it is somewhat exciting, as I am living in an environment, which even now, is being written in the pages of history. Here in Taji, I am living a VERY SHORT distance (near the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers) from what is written in the Bible as the actual location of the Garden of Eden. For some, in their minds, a crazy decision on my part to be here. To me, in my mind, a prayer-answered, from God, to not let me live a boring life. It just keeps getting better and better. After that... I want to settle in Colorado, and build a home on some land that I own there. Whew! As we, probably all have realized at some point-in-time during our life, I have more thin...Expand for more
gs I want to do, more places I want to see, and many more projects I want to complete, than I have years left in my life. And... I think that's good! (Entered 01-May-2008) Since then, worked in Saudia Arabia, visited Jeddah (swam in the Red Sea), visited/lived in Russia, presently working in a 'red zone' in Iraq. Luckily, I have the time to take extended vacations during these assignments, reducing the stress and monotony of traditional employment. I have a low boredom threshold, ya'll! This is a BIG PLUS for me in my job and life. That's about all of the space that I want to take up with this. I have a tendency to ramble, so I'm doing you a favor at this time by stopping here. *** Added 12-May-2008 *** I HAVE THE TIME NOW, SO THE FOLLOWING IS STUFF I HAVE THE OPTION TO RESPOND TO, IN "Classmates" Story Wizard: I always wanted to be a person to travel when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a too adventurous idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. If I won $100 million, I'd give 20% of it to my church, then spend the rest on missions I have interests in, my two sons, my grandson, perhaps my ex-stepson, and a little for me and my hobby interests. My current age is 62. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be almost dead. I was so completely wrong, again. "What happened to your first crush"? Hmmm! Don't know! Her name was Barbara Williford (Willifred??), at Hancock... sometime during the early 1950's. Ya out there Barbara? My best friend would tell you I'm intense and focused, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as sometimes intense and sometimes focused. "What's the weirdest job you've ever had"? Don't know, I'm still living. In 10 years, I plan to be alive. I'm going to get there by maintaining my health to the best of my ability, keeping body and mind active, making rational decisions, and the continued inhalation and exhalation of a nitrogen-oxygen air mixture¿in CO. :-) "What about you would surprise everyone at your high school reunion"? Too many to list! At Mehlville's 10-year Reunion, I was voted most changed. My first (paycheck) job was at the G.E.M. Store, on LeMay Ferry, where I was paid about $1.25/hr., to make caramel popcorn. What I remember most about it is I didn't eat that stuff again for at least 25-years. "How do you hope old friends remember you"? I guess it would be 'giving more than I had-needed-received!'
